Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Piano Marvel is a highly recommended app on r/piano, particularly praised for its structured approach to learning and its robust sight-reading tools. It is frequently cited as a top choice for adult learners due to its immediate MIDI feedback, which tracks accuracy and rhythm, and its extensive library of graded pieces. While the sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, users note that the app prioritizes functionality over visual polish and may have limitations in teaching absolute beginners how to read music from scratch.

Pros

  • Strong focus on sight-reading through the SASR (Standard Assessment of Sight Reading) tool
  • Immediate MIDI feedback on note accuracy and rhythm
  • Extensive library of thousands of graded pieces across various genres
  • Structured method and technique sections that provide a clear progression path
  • Ability to import musicxml files and sheet music from external sources like MuseScore
  • Generally more affordable than similar competitors

Cons

  • Sheet music engravings are frequently described as being of poor quality
  • May lack sufficient introductory material for absolute beginners who cannot yet read music
  • Note detection can occasionally be unreliable according to some users
  • Some users find the sight-reading material insufficient for overcoming advanced plateaus

Caveats

  • Requires a MIDI connection (via tablet or computer) to utilize the live feedback features effectively
  • The interface is often described as functional rather than aesthetically modern
  • Users suggest it should be used 'judiciously' rather than as a sole source of instruction

Best for

  • Improving sight-reading skills
  • Adult learners and 'late starters' seeking a structured curriculum
  • Users with MIDI-capable keyboards who want instant feedback

Avoid if

  • You require high-quality, professional-grade sheet music engravings
  • You are an absolute beginner looking for a comprehensive 'how to read music' tutorial before starting pieces

If you want to try out an app, Piano Marvel and Playground Sessions are two of the better ones, and I believe both have pretty active user communities and free trials so you can see how much you really use them.

I use piano marvel a lot, although you need to use it judiciously. ... It works best for sight reading, but pretty well for everything else. I think it is worth the price.

The immediate feedback that you don't get from a book (several of which I tried before Piano Marvel) is very helpful to me.

I highly recommend Piano Marvel! I'm 64, recently retired, and started on Piano Marvel in June. It was/is fantastic! Try the free trial. You'll definitely want to sign up.

Im a 50+ latestarter doing a bit music production in Ableton im doing pianomarvel for 2 month and im loving it. if you connect the piano or a masterkeyboard via midi it shows you directly on the sheet where you played a wrong note or out of rythm, its great direct feedback. It has sightreading tests and whatnot.

I have downloaded hundreds of exercises in this regard, used SASR from Piano Marvel and gone through their method books sight-reading the pieces... Piano Marvel has musicxml imports and lots of pieces on there, but the engravings are not great most of the time.
