Penang is fun. Lots to see and do. Food is great. Scooter rental is cheap. Very walkable. Cool weekend only indie markets too.
We stayed in small homestays (still private bathroom etc, like a hotel, but in family homes) in Bangkok ($57/night), Hat Yai ($34/night), and Penang ($35/night), rented a fancy condo in Malacca ($50/night), and stayed at a budget hotel in Singapore ($157/night).
