You can ask to be issued a new PASMO card when buying the pass, or opt to get them on paper instead

Japan’s IC cards — Suica, Pasmo, Icoca depending on the region — are super convenient.

Of course, if you want a physical card, do get a regular Suica/Pasmo/Toica/Manaca etc whereever you travel as a useful memento.

For intracity travel, an IC card (Suica, Pasmo, etc.).

Suica, Icoca, Pasmo, etc are all IC cards. They should work nationwide wherever IC cards work, with some exceptions.

Also I highly recommend getting the local transit card (Suica or Pasmo, they're interchangeable). The fare machines don't always accept non-Japanese cards, and it's easier to preload a card with cash than have to look up the fare for every trip you take, buy a ticket, and deal with the change.

In Osaka, we switched to using Pasmo. Worked great in Osaka, Kyoto, Uji, & Tokyo.

If you have an iPhone, you can add an electronic IC card (ICOCA, PASMO and Suica) to your wallet and top it up via Apple Pay.
