Outer Wilds
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Outer Wilds is widely regarded as a masterpiece of the mystery and exploration genres, centered on a unique knowledge-based progression system where the player's understanding is the only thing that limits access to the world. While it is frequently cited as a life-changing or "10/10" experience, it is also polarizing; the central time-loop mechanic and lack of hand-holding can lead to significant frustration, stress, and feelings of being lost.
Pros
- Innovative knowledge-based progression where everything is accessible from the start if you know how to reach it.
- Highly immersive world-building with no 'chaff'; every element serves the story and mechanics.
- Excellent in-game 'murder board' map that helps players track connections and clues without being laborious.
- A profound sense of wonder and discovery that rewards curiosity over combat or traditional leveling.
Cons
- The constant 'ticking clock' of the time loop can be stressful and frustrating for some players.
- Significant potential to hit a wall or get 'stumped' on puzzles, leading to tedious backtracking.
- Certain events require waiting for specific times, which can feel like a chore.
- Lore is delivered through alien text that some find difficult to follow or remember.
Caveats
- The game is a 'one-time' experience; once you know the solutions, there is virtually no replay value.
- Extremely sensitive to spoilers; the community strongly recommends going in 'completely blind.'
- It is a mystery/puzzle game at its core, not a traditional space exploration or action game.
Best for
- Players who enjoy 'knowledge is power' mechanics similar to Tunic.
- Fans of deep, atmospheric mysteries and non-linear storytelling.
- Those looking for a holistic, immersive experience where mechanics and plot are inseparable.
Avoid if
- You are easily stressed by time limits or countdown mechanics.
- You prefer games with clear waypoints and explicit hand-holding.
- You dislike reading lore-heavy text to progress.

What a truly great game. The great innovation of this game that makes space feel so cozy and explorable is the scale.
I really enjoyed this game, but at some point I hit a wall and just could not work out what to do next. I’d be exploring that planet with the black hole in the centre but couldn’t work out a shortcut to get there quick enough and would run out of time and have to do it again. Eventually I just gave up out of frustration because that constant ticking clock was too stressful.
I second the recommend on the outer wilds, one of the best experiences in gaming ever (for me)
I'm glad you enjoyed Outer Wilds, it's truly one of a kind to everyone that could connect with the game. I hope you played the DLC as well, is as good as the main game.
So Rain World is in my top 3 games of all time. Tied with Outer Wilds and Disco Elysium, with these 3 constantly vying for the #1 spot.
The Outer Wilds devs have spoken extensively about their design philosophy of ensure each key location in their game world having at least three other locations within their game world pointing to it
Both games probably appeal to similar people, but OW is way more complete as a game.
I’ve always been fascinated by the stars and the endless possibilities of the galaxies out there – it’s why my gamertag is “Galexzzz” and my favourite game of all time is Outer Wilds.
if you like Souls-likes and weird meta puzzle games like Outer Wilds, pick up Tunic right now. cannot recommend enough.
Personally I love that twist, one of the greatest moments of the game imo. ... I just love the ship controls, and entering the Sun Station brought me back to that reveal. The whole level design, from the teleport to the stressful flight between the two sections to finally entering the giant empty chamber with the giant window to the sun... This game just does these big reveal moments so well.
