If you're in it for the history, definitely make sure to take the train out to Ostia Antica for the day.
It is fairly impressive, although admittedly, not as impressive as Pompeii, but to someone who has never been to either, I think it's a nice compromise.

I like Ostia Antica, but to me it doesn't compare with Pompeii or Herculaneum.
When we went back with our 2 adults sons and their one friend, we did Ostia Antica instead. Ostia Antica is outside of Rome by the airport. It much cheaper to get there and only takes 45 minutes vs. the 2 hours to get to Pompeii. We did a group tour with City Wonders and it was really fantastic. With the exception of the cast dyes, Ostia pretty much has the same things as Pompeii (bakery, brothel, villas, mosaics, bath house). There is also more trees (shade) than Pompeii and way way less crowded.
I read on Reddit only someone mention that Ostia Antica was way better than Pompeii and a little off the beaten path so I included that.
