Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Old Navy is widely regarded as a go-to brand for affordable basics, maternity wear, and specialized sizing like tall and long inseams. While it is praised for its value and specific items like cotton sweaters and linen blends, users frequently note trade-offs in fabric durability and sizing consistency.

Pros

  • Excellent value for budget-conscious shoppers, especially during sales.
  • Strong selection of tall, long-inseam, and maternity sizes.
  • Reliable source for workwear basics and athletic gear.
  • Good entry-level brand for testing new styles before investing in premium pieces.

Cons

  • Inconsistent fabric quality; some items like joggers are reported as very thin.
  • Susceptibility to shrinkage after washing, particularly with shirts.
  • Sizing issues in specific lines, such as curvy or postpartum denim where waist-to-thigh ratios may not fit well.
  • Style palette is often described as limited to boring or neutral colors.

Caveats

  • Quality is generally considered 'good for the price' rather than long-term durable.
  • Sizing consistency varies significantly between different cuts and product lines.

Best for

  • Tall and maternity shoppers looking for accessible options.
  • Budget-friendly basics and office-appropriate workwear.
  • Quick-dry athletic clothing and seasonal items like linen blends.

Avoid if

  • You are looking for 'Buy It For Life' (BIFL) durability.
  • You prefer vibrant, unique designs over neutral basics.
  • You are highly sensitive to garment shrinkage.

My 2 favorite stores are American Eagle and Old Navy so I’ve gotten some stuff on sale there.

My favorite sweaters in the last few years have been from… Old Navy! I recently got a 100% cotton oversized cardigan from them and as I’m traveling in the southern hemisphere (it’s winter here) I’ve worn it almost every day this month. It’s washed well.

Old Navy. I love their basics and the fact that they have petite sizing!

Old Old Navy is SO good. I have a 100% cotton ON denim button down dress I thrifted with hidden buttons to ensure no gapping at the top. With pockets!! They just don’t make them like they used to.

I grew up with Old Navy, didn't even glance at them from ~2000-2020, and then rediscovered them in the last few years. There are some decent finds if you keep an eye out.

Honestly I think a lot of lower quality ones without real wool are less itchy. See if there are ones you like at American Eagle or Old Navy

I go on Old Navy online, and target, and everything looks... sort of ugly. And I don’t mean that as a rude term. It’s just things that I sort of expect to find at a good will. Plain, not flattering shapes, and patterns that I think I’m trained to think is for older ladies.

Old Navy models most of their clothing on a small, large, and XL model so you can see how it fits as it scales. Super helpful!

Everyone saying J crew is correct but for budget items in a similar vein try Gap and Old Navy.
