Oahu
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Oahu is widely regarded as an excellent destination for first-time visitors to Hawaii, offering a dense concentration of activities ranging from historical sites like Pearl Harbor to natural attractions like rainforests and waterfalls. While highly praised for its diverse hiking and snorkeling opportunities, some travelers find it overly touristy or too similar to the mainland United States, and the high cost of visiting is a common point of contention.
Pros
- Abundance of activities including Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay, and the North Shore
- Diverse natural beauty featuring rainforests, waterfalls, and clear water for snorkeling
- Rich historical significance, specifically Pearl Harbor
- Strong infrastructure for solo travelers, including hostel options
Cons
- High cost of travel and stay
- Can feel overly touristy, particularly the boat tours and Waikiki
- Some areas may feel too similar to the mainland U.S. for those seeking a more 'exotic' escape
Caveats
- Waikiki Beach is noted as being man-made, which may not appeal to those seeking natural beaches
- Opinions on the island's atmosphere are mixed; while many love the variety, others find little to enjoy outside of major historical landmarks
Best for
- First-time Hawaii visitors
- Solo travelers
- History buffs and outdoor enthusiasts
- Travelers who prefer having many activities in a concentrated area
Avoid if
- You are on a strict budget
- You want to avoid highly commercialized or 'touristy' environments
- You are looking for a destination that feels significantly different from the continental U.S.

I've been on those half-day tourist boat snorkeling trips a couple times as a solo female traveler in Hawaii, both in Oahu and Maui. Yes it's very touristy, but the ocean was still gorgeous and I saw so many great fish and sea turtles.
we’re spending Sept to Nov in Oahu. Take the trip! It’s so worth it!
Oahu seems like paradise. We love the fact that it has rainforest, humidity, beautiful plants, hikes, waterfalls, nice beaches, clear water for snorkeling, etc. what we don’t like is the cost and the fact that it might seem very similar with what we are used to here in the states.
There's plenty to do in Oahu though and I stayed in a hostel there around 10 nights myself.
I definitely recommend going back, we are planning a trip this year to Oahu, since we have done Maui and Big island now.
Other than Pearl Harbor I really did not like Oahu.
There is a lot on the island of Oahu - you don't need to go to another island, but always fun if you can - I love the big island of Hawaii. Oahu - diamond head hike, snorkel in Hanauma Bay, eat mr. matsumoto's ice, dole pineapple farm, Pearl Harbor, hikes (there are lots of good ones), visit Waikiki beach (man made so not my thing but may be yours), go to north shore - watch surfers, and more.
For a first time trip to Hawaii and for about a week, I’d stay on just Oahu. There is so much to do.
Oahu offers great adventures
The other islands like Oahu and Big Island are also awesome places
