Pros

  • I have neither, but the Novation Peak and Summit feel to me like a modern Virus type sound.
  • The only thing I might change is to go back from the Novation Summit back down to the Peak so I don't need to carry this massive boi with me.
  • With the Novation peak, I can just turn it on and immediately get ideas going, but the Sub 37 feels like more of a grind to use.
  • I still prefer the Peak filter because it can sound pure or you overdrive it quite a bit. I think that making sure you drive the oscillators in the pre filter mix helps and you can overdrive. It doesnt sound dark to me in that scenario.
  • The Peak is slightly dark. It’s a very 3D sounding synth that sits really well in mixes. If you need that searing top end you’ll want that Rev2, but damn if the Peak doesn’t have something special about it.

Cons

  • My current setup is: * Novation Peak
  • If my recapping job on my JP-8080 fails over the holiday break, my plan is to replace it with a Peak. I would miss the feedback oscillator on the 8080, and even though it's not a VA, for me the Peak is the heir-apparent to the 8080. Sli...
  • I put the peak back in its box after playing around with it for a few weeks. The oscillators just have a tone that really turned me off.
  • The Fpga oscillators are missing some of the flaws of an analog oscillator which adds high end harmonics. The Peak can sound dull in that respect despite the Rev2 oscillators being almost too precise in their tuning.
  • I will say most Peak presets are garbage and focus too much on showing off features. I spent a week just making bread and butter patches with it and found it to be capable of more than I expected.

If my recapping job on my JP-8080 fails over the holiday break, my plan is to replace it with a Peak. I would miss the feedback oscillator on the 8080, and even though it's not a VA, for me the Peak is the heir-apparent to the 8080. Sliders for the envelopes, 6u enclosure, knob count, and form factor all match what I'm accustomed to after all this time... EXCEPT: not bitimbral last I checked.
