Pros

  • We stayed until basically closing time, it was really great, even without being a huge Nintendo video game nerd (it's a fairly recent hobby for me). Highly recommended.
  • If you are a Nintendo fan then there is the recently (Oct24) opened Nintendo Museum in Uji that could be combined with the day trip there.
  • Day 10 (Tue, Apr 13): South Kyoto. Nintendo Museum in the morning (praying to the lottery gods lol).
  • Check daily or set a reminder for ticket drawings (opens up 60 days to 3 months prior).
  • Note that this day heavily based around if we can get tickets to the Nintendo Museum and for what time

Cons

  • Shinkansen plus Nintendo at 2 plus Yokai at 5:30 is a lot of transit for a first Kyoto afternoon. I'd drop Nintendo or the festival, not try both off the train.
  • I personally liked the Nintendo museum, but for a lot of my friends who have gone they thought it was pretty lacking and mentioned they probably would have cut it from their itinerary.
  • Make sure you have already got your Nintendo museum tickets. They are +1 month ahead lotto purchases only. They sell out super fast because ya know, dorks.
  • Kyoto planning was a bit tricky in general to plan with our short window there, especially with the Nintendo Museum thrown in. It was one of the first things I booked before I realized how out of the way it was from most of our other rec...
  • This was great since we grew up playing Nintendo. If you are not a Nintendo fan, however, the exhibits likely won't be as compelling.

Visit the Nintendo Museum in the morning, subject to getting tickets.

Nintendo Museum. It's not fancy but nostalgic. ... Tickets are hard to get; we only found a 4:30pm slot. Book early and aim for morning to avoid crowds. The game area gets packed.

It's not fancy but nostalgic. I got to tell my son how I played Gen 1 Pokémon growing up while he’s playing Gen 4. Tickets are hard to get; we only found a 4:30pm slot. Book early and aim for morning to avoid crowds.
