Ninh Binh is highly regarded for its "otherworldly" karst landscapes and serves as a tranquil, nature-focused alternative to the noise and pollution of Hanoi. While frequently visited as a day trip, many travelers recommend staying 2 to 3 days to fully explore the area via bike or boat, though some warn that the main tourist sites can feel overly commercialized.
Pros
- Stunning karst landscapes and scenery
- Relaxed atmosphere compared to major cities like Hanoi
- Excellent for biking through rice fields and rural areas
- Scenic boat tours through caves at Trang An and Tam Coc

- Repetitive experiences if doing multiple similar boat tours
Caveats
- Travelers are divided on whether it is best as a quick day trip or a multi-day stay
- Main attractions are heavily managed for tourism

A day trip from Hanoi to Ninh Binh (photos 5 and 6) where I hiked up Hang Mua and floated through caves at Trang An. The karst landscape here is otherworldly and a wonderful contrast to the madness of traffic and air pollution in Hanoi
Ninh was great, worth 2 full days there.
Ninh Binh is a must visit for 2 - 3 full days.
Trips from Hanoi: Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay, although if you only have a few days I would just pick one.
It’s pretty but the tourist sites were all fairly crowded and felt a bit Disney-ified. My favorite thing to do there was just biking around the rice fields and stopping in at random places on the side of the road for a beer or a banh mi.
I really enjoy Ninh Binh and spent 4 days there.
But from the top of my head a few I remember: Ha Giang, Ba Be Lake, Mu Cang Chai , Halong Bay, Cat Ba Island, Ninh Binh, Phong Nha Kebang, Hue, Hoi An, Da Lat, Ben Tre, Can Tho
Also, between Trang An and Tam Coc, I’d pick just one. Doing both sounds more like checking them off a list than actually enjoying the experience
Ninh binh is absolutely beautiful.
If you enjoy nature and beautiful scenery, Ninh Binh is definitely worth a one-day trip because of its stunning landscapes and boat tours
