Nikko

Nikko is highly regarded as a premier destination for its blend of intricate historical sites and natural beauty, particularly its temples, shrines, and waterfalls. While it is a staple day trip from Tokyo, there is a strong consensus that a single day is often insufficient to appreciate the area without feeling rushed, leading many to recommend at least one overnight stay.
Pros
- Exceptional historical architecture, specifically the Toshogu Shrine and Shinkyo Bridge.
- Diverse natural attractions including national parks, waterfalls, and mountain hiking.
- Accessible from Tokyo via dedicated trains like the Spacia X from Asakusa.
- Offers a broader variety of activities compared to Hakone, balancing onsen culture with significant historical sites.
- Scenic and calming walks, such as the path lined with Jizo statues.
Cons
- Long transit times (several hours each way) can make a day trip exhausting and limited.
- Extreme crowding ('a zoo') during weekends, public holidays, and the autumn leaf season.
- Severe traffic congestion can make local buses slower than walking several kilometers.
- Early winter sunsets (around 4:30 PM) significantly restrict sightseeing windows.
Caveats
- Many travelers regret only spending one day and suggest an overnight stay to see more than just the main shrine complex.
- The 'classic' route is popular but requires careful timing to avoid the heaviest tourist traffic.
- Buses within Nikko can become effectively unusable during peak holiday periods due to gridlock.
Best for
- Nature and hiking enthusiasts.
- Travelers interested in Japanese religious history and ornate shrine architecture.
- Those looking for a scenic escape from Tokyo's urban environment.
- Visitors who can schedule their trip on a weekday to avoid crowds.
Avoid if
- You have a very short total itinerary (e.g., 10 days) and want to minimize long transit days.
- You are visiting during a major holiday like Culture Day and dislike dense crowds.
- You prefer modern city attractions over quiet, temple-focused towns.

As for day trip, I absolutely suggest picking one of the following three: 1. Nikko (majestic shrines in the woods)
Day 1- Nikko daytrip (You can also consider somewhere like Atami, its included in the area)
Nikko is a nice place but keep in mind that it takes a few hours to get up there, and the sun sets around 4:30pm that time of year, so you will be very limited on time. Given that you only have 10 days, I'd say it's not really worth it for this trip.
Don't have to be Nikko, but its a good day trip to do from Tokyo. Easy to get there and its beauitful.
Nikko is definitely a great place to do a day excursion from Tokio.
Nikko might be a cool day trip.
Nikko is probably the best autumn foliage destination at that time.
tbh if you want a slightly easier version, nikko as a day trip from tokyo hits nature + temples hard and you don't have to drag bags around.
How about Nikko? That's a beautiful area, not too far from Tokyo.
We did the "classic" route: Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hakone, and Nikko. It lived up to the hype and then some.
