Pros

  • IMO, instead of getting this bottle, one should either: 1. Step up to Nikka Coffey Grain/Malt, From the Barrel or even Hibiki Harmony
  • my current recommendation for people looking to try something a bit less common is "Nikka from the Barrel". Its relatively cheap in Japan, but hits above its weight in terms of taste.
  • Tasting wise, it is apparent that Nikka from the Barrel is one step ahead of its Kirin equivalent in almost every aspect- Nikka offers more complexity (additional smokey character, more different distinct notes), better balance (particul...
  • I think it's one of the best for your $ bottle, but it's higher in proof, so if it's too strong for you, just add some water or ice.
  • Nikka from the Barrel! Complex flavor, smooth, and a good price

Cons

  • Side note, but it's classified as 'Not A Japanese Whiskey' by JSLMA's standards, just like its bigger, bolder cousin Nikka from the Barrel.
  • It’s a bit more than I usually spend - Nikka from the Barrel is my usual!!

Tasting wise, it is apparent that Nikka from the Barrel is one step ahead of its Kirin equivalent in almost every aspect- Nikka offers more complexity (additional smokey character, more different distinct notes), better balance (particularly in the sweet and bitterness), as well as a better mouthfeel (less alcohol sting despite being higher abv).

Hibiki, Nikka Taketsuru, Nikka from the Barrel, Ichiros malt & grain (white label), Yamazaki NAS, Hakushu NAS, Mars Maltage Cosmo are kinda the entry price starter pack to see what you like.

Parent context: I loved Tailored, both Coffey Malt and Grain. Haven't had from the Barrel though. How does that compare? Peaty? Sweet? Reply: Balanced and a bit stronger. It is a world whiskey- There is apparently Ben Nevis whiskey in it (a distillery which Nikka owns). I can’t imagine you disliking it since you like Tailored.
