I went for the first time last summer and loved it. The old town is gorgeous. The city is very walkable and the trains are easy for day trips. I didn't feel the "rich people" French Riverera vibe at all, in a good way. There's definitely character. Food is fantastic. I highly recommend.
When we were there in July 24 it wasn’t busy at all, but then again a lot of folks were in Paris for the Olympics. We did Nice, Moustiers, Gourdes, CDP, and then finished in Cassis. Awesome trip with perfect weather and not nearly as crowded as we expected
Nice is closer and will be fractionally warmer if that's important to you. Probably cheaper than Como as well although Como is obviously expensive for good reason, it's stunning.
