New York City is widely celebrated as a premier global destination known for its exceptional walkability, 24-hour energy, and extensive public transit system. While visitors frequently praise its safety for solo travelers and the endless variety of activities, the city is equally noted for its high cost of living, urban grime, and a social culture that can come across as blunt or impatient.
Pros
- Excellent walkability and a comprehensive subway system that reaches most tourist areas.
- Constant activity and entertainment options; often described as a city where it is impossible to be bored.
- Generally perceived as safe for solo travelers and pedestrians, particularly in Manhattan.
- Diverse architecture and distinct neighborhoods that offer unique experiences just by wandering.
Cons
- Extremely high costs for hotels, food, and entertainment, with some comparing prices to Switzerland.
- Urban cleanliness issues, including reports of the city being 'stinky' and dirty, especially during summer months.
- Public interactions can be 'short' or blunt, which may be off-putting to some visitors.
- Driving is considered a major hindrance due to traffic and the efficiency of public transit.
Caveats
- While locals may seem impatient if you are in the way, they are often noted as being helpful in actual emergencies.
- The summer heat can significantly intensify city odors, while winter can be 'dead' and frozen.
- Some travelers find that a stay as long as three weeks may be too much for a single visit.
Best for
- Solo travelers
- Urban explorers who prefer walking and public transit
- Fans of architecture and 24-hour city life
- Short-to-medium length city breaks
Avoid if
- You are on a strict budget
- You are sensitive to urban smells or lack of cleanliness
- You prefer car-dependent travel or a slow-paced environment

Nothing against Morocco/Turkey/Middle East but NYC isn’t a financial powerhouse just because of tourist sensibilities
NYC Subways systems put you almost anywhere a tourist can want to go. Bonus suggestion, Staten Island ferry is free to ride both ways and if you time it late afternoon/ sunset, Statue of Liberty is great photo opportunity with sun behind it. So basically car is a necessity for Las Vegas and a major hindrance in NYC
Traveling solo in NYC is overall both safe and easy since there's easy public transit. You can also easily take a train (via Amtrak) from NYC to Boston, Philadelphia, or Washington DC, all of which also have solid public transit and lots to see.
NYC is easy to navigate, Subway stations are everywhere Very walkable city.
NYC, LA, and Miami are centers for dumb shallow people.
For instance, my favorite place to vacation in the US is NYC. For some people, NYC would be a nightmare.
Hotel, entertainment and food costs are higher especially in the tourist areas of the states than in most of europe.
There are so many tourists still coming to the Big Apple. Enjoy your stay.
If you’re good looking then vegas, NYC, Miami and LA go hard. Willd times out there, on “the scene”.
NYC is always a safe option, but it’s still kind of in that in-between season (can be great, can be cold and rainy).
