Pros

  • Nettle and bone: a girl saves her sister from an evil prince w two lesbian grandmas, a demon chicken, and some guy (it’s so good)
  • Nettle and Bone won the Hugo a few years ago. Definitely one of my favorites!
  • TL;DR: "Nettle and Bone" by T. Kingfisher is the best Naomi Novik fairy tale book not written by Naomi Novik. Strong recommendation.
  • Not every book (eg not Nettle and Bone) but the more romance ones. But I have read most of them so I guess they work for me
  • Nettle and Bone by T Kingfisher

  • Hmm yeah I love Novik but haven’t much liked Kingfisher, including Nettle and Bone. It’s in the same subgenre as some of Novik I guess?
  • I know this book is super popular but I did not enjoy it at all. Couldn’t really even give a reason why, it just didn’t resonate with me

My best guess is that the stakes never quite felt real, nor was it believable to me that these characters would risk their lives for this person they are not close to or have never even met (which is perhaps another way of saying I never believed the personal/emotional stakes). It was sort of a bundle of tropes stitched together but you could see the light through the gaps.
