Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Netgear Orbi App is overwhelmingly viewed negatively by users, who describe it as buggy, slow, and frequently unreliable for network management. Common complaints center on the app's inability to detect the router even when the mobile device is connected to the Wi-Fi, as well as inaccurate reporting of connected devices and satellite status.

Pros

  • Allows for remote connection using the same credentials as the web interface

Cons

  • Frequently reports 'WiFi not detected' despite being connected
  • Inaccurate reporting of device lists and satellite connection types (e.g., showing wireless satellites as hardwired)
  • Slow loading times and sluggish speed tests compared to previous versions
  • Mandatory requirement to create an online account for use
  • Unreliable network status updates due to reliance on Orbi Cloud rather than direct router communication

Caveats

  • The app is designed for consumer Orbi lines and is not compatible with Orbi Pro systems
  • Firmware updates through the app may fail for End-of-Life (EOL) devices
  • Access control and parental control features are often reported as broken or difficult to manage within the app interface

Best for

  • Basic remote monitoring when the web-based admin page is inaccessible

Avoid if

  • You require accurate, real-time reporting of connected devices
  • You prefer local-only management without a cloud account
  • You are using an Orbi Pro system
  • You have a low tolerance for glitchy or slow mobile interfaces

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median source age of approximately 405 days, so confidence is lower as the app may have received updates since these reports.

I refuse to use the app since it wants me to make an online account.

The app takes up a lot of battery usage. Even when I remove it from background task, it came right back shortly.

Don’t rely on the Orbi app. It has never been 100% accurate regarding devices. Use the web interface 192.168.1.1) instead.

Deleting the app and reinstalling fixed it for me (I could get network status, but when checking for updates, the app would repeatedly “connecting” state and never get to the end)

Orbi app is very buggy I have had this issue before what worked for me was uninstalling the app and then reinstalling it and logging back in and that fixes it.

I have the 970 router but I also experienced a temporary problem connecting with the Orbi app a couple of days ago but my web interface to the router always worked.

The app is garbage. I started using the web interface from my desktop and even my phone and it's more responsive with better functionality.
