Netgear Orbi 770
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The Netgear Orbi 770 is a high-end mesh Wi-Fi system that receives highly polarized feedback from users. While some report excellent speeds and stability, particularly when using a wired backhaul, a significant portion of the community experiences frequent connection drops, firmware instability, and difficulties with IoT device connectivity.
Pros
- Delivers high speeds and strong performance when stable
- Effective at providing coverage in challenging environments, such as buildings with reinforced concrete
- Wired backhaul configuration significantly improves reliability for some users
- Recent firmware updates have reportedly resolved disconnect issues for a subset of owners
Cons
- Frequent and random Wi-Fi disconnects across various devices
- Unstable firmware that may require frequent reboots
- Poor performance with IoT and smart home devices, including cameras and doorbells
- Roaming issues where mobile devices fail to transition smoothly between nodes
- High price point relative to the perceived stability of the system
Caveats
- Reliability appears to be highly dependent on firmware version and backhaul method (wired vs. wireless)
- Some mentions in the data for '770' refer to audio equipment (headphones) rather than the mesh router
- Automated firmware checks have been reported to fail even when an internet connection is active
Best for
- Users who can utilize a wired backhaul for their mesh satellites
- Large homes or buildings with thick walls where traditional routers struggle
- Early adopters comfortable with troubleshooting firmware issues
Avoid if
- You have a large number of IoT or smart home devices that require a stable 2.4GHz connection
- You want a 'set and forget' system with a proven track record of out-of-the-box stability
- You are on a tight budget, as many users find the cost high for the level of reliability offered
This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median source age of approximately 301 days, which may not reflect the very latest firmware improvements for this fast-changing hardware category.

I would not recommend the 770; they're not a neutral tune; they're pretty bright. To the point where they give me a headache after 10-15 minutes.
I know people like the 770 but to me it's painfully trebly and I can't wear it for more than 10-15 minutes without getting a headache.
I love my 770 setup over what I had. It’s super reliable for me so there is likely a glitch in yours.
If they fixed you’re 970. Please tell them to fix my Orbi 770.
No updates for 6 months and the products are only good for 3 years according to them Feels like they abandon their products by not updating and consumers are left with expensive paperweights.
Same fo ther 770, crazy how they killed off devices to promote buying new ones and then basically abandoned them. 6+ months isnt supporting anything. I was relatively happy with Orbi before but wont buy it again. Expensive hardware, zero software support is pathetic for what they charge.
Through the Obri web GUI I rebooted (I can always get to this page, but not out to the Internet) same issue, still no Internet access. What worked was restoring the original Obri770 WAN MAC address, and then a few minutes later putting the cloned WAN MAC address back.
At this point I think I'll just return it. The fact that the port is up and receiving packets is really annoying. It works just enough to make me think this is a config issue and not a bad router / port. According to all the documentation both from Quantum Fiber and Netgear, it should just work out of the box with no fuss
The router can't get to the internet and it's driving me mad. I restarted the set up process three or four times on the app then in a browser. ... When the router plugs in to the same port on the modem it gets 0.0.0.0 and the internet status shows "Waiting".
Parent context: Yeah, I cannot turn off Guest or IOT. Says off but both still available. Reply: I agree. It was the biggest disappointment for me too. That and the occasional intermittent connection.
