Pros
- Nagoya resident here and yeah, the food & food culture here are some of the absolute best things about the city.
- Nagoya is my favorite Japanese city, esp if you like food. You’ll wish you would have allocated more time for Nagoya when you taste the food. There are a ton of day trips, and it isn’t over-touristed.
- Nagoya has my favorite food in all of Japan that I've tried. The things they do with Haccho Miso are just incredible. I also love it because it isn't over-touristed.
- you should spend the night in Nagoya and visit the city since it has lots and lots to offer, similar to Osaka but without the insane crowds.
- I went to Nagoya on my last trip which is painted as ‘boring’ but I wasn’t bored for a single moment!
Cons
- Nagoya is a place I need to revisit. It was only a half‑day stop in between shinkansens, so I didn’t expect much, but I feel like I barely scratched the surface of what I could do there.
- In the Kobe zone of boring and not a lot to do

Nagoya is similar to Osaka without the insane crowds. And you can do more unique stuff there and around.
personally I think it’s a great city, and am sure your son will enjoy the coasters at Spaland.

I think Nagoya is a good option, since you already have some places to visit when you're there. Makes the travel to Kyoto quicker the next day as well.
