Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Mostar is highly regarded as a beautiful and affordable destination known for its lively energy, historic bridge, and great food. While it is a popular stop for travelers in the Balkans, opinions are mixed on the ideal length of stay, with some finding it perfect for a day trip and others feeling it can become overly touristy.

Pros

  • Affordable compared to many other European destinations
  • Lively atmosphere with a great 'vibe' and energy
  • Unique cultural experiences, such as watching the bridge jumpers
  • Excellent food at low price points
  • Convenient as a day trip or stopover between cities like Kotor, Sarajevo, and Split

Cons

  • Can become very crowded and 'touristy,' particularly in peak months like August
  • Limited activities beyond the main bridge and historic center; some feel it can be seen in a few hours
  • The main tourist area can feel like a 'standard pedestrian' tourism neighborhood

Caveats

  • Mostar is not in the Schengen area, which may have visa implications for some travelers
  • Some visitors find that staying more than one day is too long due to the small size of the main attractions
  • The famous bridge is a replica, which may be a minor point of contention for those seeking original structures

Best for

  • Budget-conscious travelers
  • Day trippers from nearby Balkan cities
  • Photography enthusiasts and history buffs

Avoid if

  • You prefer destinations with a vast list of diverse activities
  • You want to avoid highly commercialized tourist crowds
  • You are traveling strictly within the Schengen zone without additional visas

Definitely Mostar. The city itself is great and I did a day tour to surrounding areas.

We loved Kotor, Montenegro. Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina isn't too far and they're both really interesting, beautiful, affordable locations.

Blagaj felt quiet and slow, Mostar was lively and full of energy, and Sarajevo felt like a mix of everyday life and history. Each place had a very different atmosphere.

Mostar is basically just a cool replica bridge and standard pedestrian pure tourism neighborhood on either side. You can see it all in a couple hours.

Too ambitious, and you do not have the correct visa for Kotor/Mostar/Istanbul, they are not in Schengen.
