Pros

  • so the only thing I think DFAM excels is that sweet spot sound every Moog has.
  • The DFAM is a great piece of kit, and no you don't really need much to use it.
  • DFAM is the same way. It started as a one-trick Nine Inch Nails box. Now I can made gentle bell sounds, almost Buchla-like percussion sounds, weird generative patches, and I added other modules to give it an ADSR envelope, to fold the wa...
  • I used to have a DFAM. I have an Edge now. I regret selling the DFAM, I liked its sound more.
  • Pros for Moog: * it's a freaking Moog (if I ever decide to sell it, better resale price probably) * since I'm already committed on the Labyrinth, DFAM being the same format makes absolute sense

Cons

  • but does it worth it for 4 times+ the price?
  • Get dfamthing or mafd or use dc-coupled audio interface to control dfam. 8-step sequencer is not very useful.
  • I'd consider the DFAM to be more of an accessory instrument that you'd use to add to a mix rather than being a good standalone device. It's great at making weird chaotic percussive sounds and blast-your-brain-out mono leads but I think i...
  • Dfams are great, but I sold mine because it didn’t play nice enough with tempo syncing (to do it, you need to send CV signals over 1/8” cable to the dfams clock input, probably from a DAW, but from any separate device that sends CV clock...
  • Not that crazy on the DFAM sound, I owned one before, it’s great fun and sounds great but very quickly you realise almost everything that comes out of it sounds very similar.

I'd consider the DFAM to be more of an accessory instrument that you'd use to add to a mix rather than being a good standalone device. It's great at making weird chaotic percussive sounds and blast-your-brain-out mono leads but I think it's going to feel kind of restrictive if you aren't sampling it or using it on top of other instruments.

DFAM is the same way. It started as a one-trick Nine Inch Nails box. Now I can made gentle bell sounds, almost Buchla-like percussion sounds, weird generative patches, and I added other modules to give it an ADSR envelope, to fold the waveforms, to make it even more flexible.

The DFAM looks much cooler though, but the controls are all over the place.
