I prefer Montepulciano over San Gimingiano. What it lacks in towers, it makes up for in charm. Feels a bit less touristy imo.
if your plan is to enjoy the place itself...I'd look somewhere else, for example Pienza, Montepulciano or Montalcino, even if they're more touristic (absolutely nothing compared to Rome or Florence)
In the Val d'Orcia (Montepulciano is a fine base), you could spend 1-2 days seeing Montepulciano itself and the surrounding towns
