Pros

  • This is a charming monster taming rpg/meteoidvania. I like how this game incorporates movement upgrade abilities obtained in regular metroidvania with monsters themselves. The turn-based combats are also deep and fun.
  • Monster Sanctuary is one of my favorite games in the genre! (I'm a monstertaming nut) My favorite part about it is definitely thre battle system because of all the things you can stack and combine.
  • Great game, wanted to mention that the evolutions aren't strict upgrades, more of a Scyther & Scizor dynamic where they're intended to be about as powerful after evolving.
  • Monster Sanctuary was so good that I don't want another mainline Pokemon game. The QoL features alone are excellent, and the gameplay was very innovative while feeling like a monster collector.
  • Bought this game on a whim, not expecting a whole lot, ended up 100%ing it in a couple of weeks. If you, like me, enjoy the idea of a creature duelling/collectathon game but have never quite been able to click with Pokemon's mechanics, t...

One gripe I do have with the game is that while the graphics are refreshingly simple to read and play with, the designs of the monsters lose so much in the world. The compendium that has lots of lore about your monsters has fully realized artworks that make some of them so much more interesting, cool or endearing.

If I had any criticism, it would be a lack of any interesting characters at all. Most games you can find at least a couple funny interactions or interesting character beats, but I really struggled to connect with anyone. The same goes for the narrative, you might expect it to surprise you at some point, but it really doesn't.

Bought this game on a whim, not expecting a whole lot, ended up 100%ing it in a couple of weeks. If you, like me, enjoy the idea of a creature duelling/collectathon game but have never quite been able to click with Pokemon's mechanics, then this may be the game for you. It remedies pretty much every issue I've personally had with mainline Pokemon.

If you're looking for a fresh take on the Pokémon formula... well, you could do worse, but you're probably better off trying out something like Monster Sanctuary or Cassette Beasts.
