AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Mirror's Edge is widely regarded as a visually timeless and unique first-person parkour game that excels in art direction and atmosphere. While its core movement mechanics provide an exhilarating sense of speed, the experience is frequently tempered by clunky combat, inconsistent platforming physics, and a narrative that many users find underdeveloped.

Pros

  • Stunning art direction and clean, vibrant color schemes that remain graphically impressive years later.
  • Exceptional soundtrack and atmosphere, particularly the work of artist Solar Fields.
  • Satisfying and unique first-person parkour mechanics that offer a strong sense of momentum.
  • Innovative gameplay that felt bold and daring for its time.

Cons

  • Weakly implemented and clunky combat mechanics.
  • Short overall playtime, with some describing it as feeling more like a 'tech demo' than a full game.
  • Inconsistent controls, including issues with ledge-grabbing and landing mechanics.
  • Thin or weak story that lacks depth compared to the gameplay.

Caveats

  • Movement can feel 'stiff' or like an object sliding on a surface rather than a person.
  • Frequent police encounters can interrupt the flow of parkour and frustrate players who want to explore.
  • The game is nearly two decades old; while the art holds up, the physics reflect the era's limitations.

Best for

  • Fans of experimental gameplay and platformers.
  • Players who prioritize aesthetic, art style, and music in games.
  • Those looking for a short, high-vibe experience.

Avoid if

  • You require a deep or engaging narrative to enjoy a game.
  • You dislike first-person platforming or 'trial and error' movement.
  • You are looking for a robust combat system.

What redditors said (10 of 27)

This game is 17 years old (which means 2008 was 17 years ago, yikes), but it still looks graphically impressive. In fact, I actually found myself nitpicking a few things about it, because when you play it, you honestly forget it's *2 decades old.*

While it looks great, the actual physics and mechanics are not as refined. It's not that they are bad, it's just what you would expect from a game of that era. Movement and platforming were stiffer back then, so it kind of always feels like you're an object sliding on a surface rather than a person made of soft flesh, but this is an just a nitpick.

Let's not forget Ubisoft also brought us Rayman Legends, Mirror's Edge, Beyond Good and Evil, Prince of Persia Sands of Time, and more recently Riders Republic.

Absolutely beautiful game, always loved the large white city with splashes of colour everywhere, good platforming, and a theme song I listen too on the regular.

Parent context: The soundtrack of Mirror's Edge 1 is absolutely fantastic. Reply: Mirror's Edge introduced me to Solar Fields, then I discovered Carbon Based Lifeforms... and way, way more artists. Truly incredible atmosphere, I might not remember everything about the game, but I certainly remember its soundtrack.

The soundtrack of Mirror's Edge 1 is absolutely fantastic. The main theme in particular is just one of those ear-worms that you'll remember for the rest of your life

The things that stuck with me the most were the bright color themed art direction (I have some high resolution no-UI screenshots that still look fantastic as desktop backgrounds to this day) and the awesome soundtrack by Solar Fields.
