The Miele triflex or duoflex models, while bagless, are much better made than the sharks you're used to.
In addition to the Miele Duoflex I'd say to keep an eye out for the Miele Triflex. The Triflex is a little heavier but you can put the motor and weight on the bottom and then it can stand up on its own.
I would recommend the Miele Triflex or the Riccar R65 instead.

On the high end (but in your budget) something like the miele triflex can be configured as an upright standing on it's own with most of the weight close to the floor.
If you look at the Triflex units, just figure out how the dirt containers work and you’ll be fine. The Triflex is hands down the best carpet and rug stick vacuum due to its powerhead.
Whenever I contact(Ed) Miele directly for warranty service regarding my triflex, they were pretty easy to just blindly send anything I needed; it felt a little silly but I'm the better for it. The charger block would short circuit pretty easily when docking the machine so I fried 2 chargers.
