AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Miele M1 (Guard M1) is a canister vacuum often described as a redesigned, cost-optimized version of the Miele Complete C3. While it retains the brand's reputation for high-quality filtration and German manufacturing, it introduces several design changes that users characterize as cost-cutting measures, such as simplified controls and smaller attachments.

Pros

  • Excellent filtration performance, especially when equipped with HEPA filters
  • Highly effective for hard floor surfaces and bare floors
  • Durable 'Buy It For Life' (BIFL) build quality, manufactured in Germany
  • Compact design compared to some other Miele canister models
  • Effective turbo brush for pet hair on rugs and carpets

Cons

  • Simplified power controls use a single button to cycle through settings rather than dedicated plus/minus buttons
  • Reduced suction settings (4 settings compared to 6 on the C3)
  • Perceived 'cheapened' attachments, specifically the upholstery nozzle and floor heads
  • Turbo brush lacks a disassembly feature, making it difficult to remove tangled hair and debris without scissors
  • Transition from metallic to plastic finishes on foot controls

Caveats

  • The M1 is frequently compared unfavorably to the older C3 model by enthusiasts due to perceived cost-cutting in materials and features.
  • Despite different wattage ratings in some regions, users suggest suction performance remains effectively the same across similar models.

Best for

  • Hard floor cleaning
  • Allergy sufferers requiring high-efficiency filtration
  • Users looking for a durable German-made vacuum at a slightly lower price point than the C3

Avoid if

  • You prefer granular suction control with plus/minus buttons
  • You want the most robust, premium tool kit Miele offers
  • You frequently deal with long pet hair and want a brush roll that is easy to disassemble for cleaning

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median age of 303 days, which is acceptable for stable household appliances but may not capture the most recent minor hardware revisions.

Miele M1 or Miele L1 canisters are the newest Miele. You can not go wrong with a Sebo also

Anyway, this Miele M1 would be a good option ... They’re under budget and would last a long time.

I recently purchased the Miele Guard m1 for my wife. She was not particularly impressed with the handling or the attachments. We have a maincoon, a ragdoll, and a large German shepherd. We used the turbo brush, which worked well on both rugs and carpets. However, my wife noticed that it was difficult to remove the built-up fur. While some floor heads have the ability to unscrew and disassemble, this one did not, so we may have to use scissors to remove the dirt. The second attachment, the all Teq, was particularly disappointing. I would advise against purchasing this product.

My recommendation would be a Miele C3 or M1 or L1. If you get them with the HEPA filters, they do a better filtration job than even Sebos.

If you only want one for hard flooring and attachment use, the Guard M1 is your best bet.

The two models seem very similar if you exclude the ergonomic handle, head and included filter. However I do see a different design in the telescopic pole and the specs state that the M1 is 890Watt vs 800Watt for the M1 Performance.

I think both the C3 and Guard M1 and great choices.

The M1 is a redesigned C3 with cost cutting initiatives (savings to the manufacturer unfortunately). There are 4 suction settings instead of 6, smaller upholstery tool, and gray plastic foot controls instead of the metallic finish. ... It's a nice machine, but I prefer the C3 over the M1.
