AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Meze 99 Classics are a highly polarizing pair of closed-back headphones, celebrated for their exceptional physical comfort and 'fun' sound signature while being criticized for a lack of technical neutrality. Users consistently praise the build quality and the warm, bass-heavy profile that makes them ideal for casual media consumption and long, fatigue-free listening sessions. However, the audiophile community is divided, with some describing the bass as 'muddy' or 'bloated' and the overall sound as lacking high-end detail.

Pros

  • Exceptional comfort suitable for 6+ hour sessions
  • Strong, 'chunky' bass and warm sound signature
  • Premium build quality and durability that holds up well over time
  • Easy to drive from almost any source, including simple dongles
  • Aesthetic appeal with high-quality wood and metal construction

Cons

  • Polarizing sound signature often described as 'muddy' or 'bloated'
  • Lack of high-frequency detail and clarity compared to neutral alternatives
  • Occasional quality control issues regarding wood blemishes or lacquer defects
  • Bass can muddle the lower mid-range for some listeners

Caveats

  • Not recommended as a 'blind buy' due to the non-neutral tuning
  • Often requires EQ to boost high frequencies for better detail retrieval
  • Community opinion is sharply split between those who love the warmth and those who find it technically lacking

Best for

  • Bass enthusiasts and fans of EDM or electronic music
  • Casual movie and music listening where 'fun' is prioritized over accuracy
  • Users who prioritize physical comfort and zero ear fatigue
  • Listeners who want a premium-feeling headphone that doesn't require a powerful amp

Avoid if

  • You are looking for a neutral, analytical, or 'audiophile' reference sound
  • You need headphones for professional audio mixing or video editing
  • You are sensitive to mid-bass bleed or 'boomy' sound profiles

The 99 Classics (and 99 Noirs) are definitely not a blind buy; you have to get used to the sound first. But then they can be a lot of fun. I would boost the high frequencies a bit with an EQ for more detail, as they are tuned to sound very warm. However, since they have very good drivers, they respond quite well to EQing.

My Meze 99 Classics V1 came with a lacquer coat defect from the factory as well, they should really pay more attention to these... I even used it with aftermarket earpads, the stock ones have like 30minutes of wear in them, so the headphone is practically brand new. Got me so annoyed, I'll never buy Meze products again...

I've tried the HD 620s, the Focal Azurys and Celestee, Meze 99 Classics, and the Aune SR7000.

And to think I was annoyed at a very small, very minor, and barely visible discoloration on my 99 Classics. I'll definitely contact Meze for this.

The 99 Classics continue to be my main pair at my desk. The sound signature isn't for everyone, which is fair. Sometimes I like reaching for something more neutral and detailed. But when it comes to perfected comfort and no ear fatigue, they are the best I've ever had.
