Merida

Check out Merida. It’s a smaller city in the Yucatán. Super safe. Super nice people. Not over touristed. Loads of historical sites in the area. Amazing food.

Merida is rated the safest city in Mexico (and second safest in North America after Quebec City), is close to the Mayan site of Uxmal, is 35 minutes from a beach, and is considered the cultural heart of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Merida is very safe.

If you’re looking at the East coast I’d highly recommend Merida. It’s a good city and if you rent a car there’s a lot of fun things to do in the surrounding areas.

I plan to retire to Merida(City in the Yucatan). This area of the country tends to have a lot less issues than some other areas of the country In fact Merida is safer than all American cities of its size.

All in all I loved Merida. If the dog attack never happened/ the antibiotics didn't make me feel sick I would have explored the state much more. But I was very satisfied exploring the city instead. It is the most colorful place I have ever been. The food was great. Everything was affordable. People are friendly. I didn't have any sketchy encounters with people. I walked around after dark every night and stayed out until midnight on multiple occasions feeling safe the whole time.

If I were you, I will stay 4 full days in Merida, and 2 full days in Puerto Morelos.
