Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Mauritius is generally praised as a beautiful and "polished" destination that is particularly well-suited for relaxation, honeymoons, and travelers seeking an easier, more accessible tropical experience. While it offers stunning beaches and a friendly atmosphere, it is frequently described as an expensive option where costs for food and lodging can escalate quickly compared to other regional alternatives.

Pros

  • Stunning beaches and varied landscapes including hiking and waterfalls
  • Friendly and welcoming local population
  • Easier navigation for less experienced international travelers
  • Culturally interesting with a notable Indian diaspora influence
  • Offers more activity variety than the Maldives, reducing the risk of 'resort boredom'

Cons

  • High cost of accommodation and dining
  • Environmental concerns regarding bleached coral reefs and lack of visible conservation
  • Less budget-friendly than competitors like the Philippines or Sri Lanka

Caveats

  • Some travelers feel the Philippines offers superior natural beauty and beaches at a lower price point
  • The 'polished' nature of the island may lack the raw adventure found in nearby Sri Lanka
  • Travel reward points tend to be consumed rapidly due to high redemption rates

Best for

  • Honeymooners and couples
  • Relaxation-focused vacations
  • October travel
  • Inexperienced travelers looking for a comfortable, high-end experience

Avoid if

  • You are on a tight budget
  • Your primary interest is diving in pristine, healthy coral reefs
  • You prefer rugged, high-adventure environments over polished tourism

I went to both. They are very different. Sri Lanka has ruins, rainforests etc whereas Mauritius has beautiful beaches and is very polished... SL may be better for adventure. But you mentioned coming from Canada and not well travelled, then Mauritius may be easier.

For October, I’d shortlist Mauritius — beautiful beaches plus hiking, waterfalls, boat trips, food scene, and varied landscapes, so you won’t get Maldives-style boredom.
