Parent context: We thought that on our way to Tokyo from Kamokochi to stop in Matsumoto to see the castle, do you think that should be enough? Reply: Matsumoto was one of our favorite towns on our 3.5 week trip. You can certainly just stop there briefly for the castle, but we were glad to have stayed 3 nights there and we really enjoyed the whole vibe of the town.

Matsumoto is a charming, compact town - I would stay at least 2-3 nights, especially if you want to do a day trip to Narai-juku.
Loved Nagano and Matsumoto, enjoy the trip!

We loved Matsumoto the most vs. Takayama and Nagano. Matsumoto felt like a compact, real town with locals going about their lives. The city is very walkable and had plenty to do and made us want to linger.
