AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Mario Kart World is a commercially successful Switch 2 exclusive that introduces an open-world structure and a highly praised 'Knockout' mode. While it features refined driving physics and a standout soundtrack, it has polarized players due to its $80 price point, controversial changes to the traditional Grand Prix mode, and the absence of basic quality-of-life features like audio sliders.

Pros

  • The 'Knockout' mode is widely regarded as addictive and a highlight of the experience.
  • Improved driving physics make handling and turning more intuitive for many players.
  • The soundtrack is highly praised for its quality, with some calling it the series' best.
  • Item effects like lightning and shrinking have been nerfed, allowing for faster recovery and less 'painful' gameplay.
  • Free roam mode provides an interesting new way to experience the game in short bursts.

Cons

  • High $80 price tag and exclusion from Nintendo's voucher program.
  • Lack of audio settings to adjust the balance between music and engine noise.
  • Clunky UI for outfit selection that can cause players to run out of time before a race.
  • Inability to create a friend lobby before searching for online matches.
  • Control issues where the charge jump and drift mechanics can be easily confused or mis-inputted.

Caveats

  • The redesigned Grand Prix mode is divisive, with some fans preferring the traditional format.
  • Tracking for in-game collectibles is reportedly poor compared to other titles like Donkey Kong Bananza.
  • Some players report a quick drop-off in engagement once the initial novelty of the new modes wears off.

Best for

  • Players looking for a more accessible racing experience with refined physics.
  • Fans of elimination-style competitive modes.
  • Switch 2 owners looking for a title that utilizes the new hardware's capabilities.

Avoid if

  • You are strictly looking for the traditional Mario Kart Grand Prix progression.
  • You are sensitive to an $80 price point for a racing game.
  • You require granular UI and audio customization options.

To be fair, most MK World copies were sold with the Switch 2 bundle. Without the Switch 2 bundle, I dont think it sold well on its own.

Parent context: People sure did turn on this game quick. Reply: Was there ever a turn? Seemed like players were generally underwhelmed since the beginning.

I bought the bundle because it was basically the only title that was exclusive to the new console but I do regret that because I just don’t like the type of game.

I can't stress enough how unreal the music is, especially because the music direction is insane. When you drive up to a track, the music changes to a pre-track intro that's timed to your arrival and then the main track. Rainbow Road has music that shifts and is all but perfectly timed to the different sections of the map. It's absolutely wild.

Parent context: I'm sort of with you. Mario Kart probably doesn't deserve the Players' Choice given the numerous issues it's had pleasing its audience. Donkey Kong though, mmm. Reply: Most of the people that had problems with MKW wouldn’t have been satisfied to begin with imo

MKW is the real crazy one to not get best music. I legit think it's $80 because of the soundtrack alone and it's worth it

Overall the game fills the void that Mario Kart World couldn't: It's a fun racer with lot's of depth and a great multiplayer experience.
