Sound fine to me if you are not particularly interested in something special in Malacca. It is a very walkable town. It is very easy to get there by bus from KL.
For west Malaysia - a place I like that not everyone goes is Malacca.
We stayed in small homestays (still private bathroom etc, like a hotel, but in family homes) in Bangkok ($57/night), Hat Yai ($34/night), and Penang ($35/night), rented a fancy condo in Malacca ($50/night), and stayed at a budget hotel in Singapore ($157/night).
1 day - Malacca: It's a UNESCO Heritag city along with Penang. One day should be enough.
If you stay central you can walk everywhere in Malacca. I stayed really close to the night market and that was easy walking distance to the river and all the cafes and things on the riverwalk, at night they have fun little pedi cabs that are decorated with lights that you can ride around. There are some nice shop house museums and old church up on a hill all of that stuff is walkable.
On Saturdays there’s a night market, which is an amazing experience. Lots of street food stalls, amazing vibe. In that case staying for the night will be worth it and make a difference!
Personally I'd stay there though.Melaka is really nice in the evening, and also early morning... best times of the day to be there.Actually spending a few days would be even better, but an overnight is certainly better than the day trip for me...
