Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Machu Picchu is widely regarded by travelers as a bucket-list destination that lives up to its significant reputation. While the logistics of visiting can be complex and the altitude challenging, the site is frequently described as a stunning feat of humanity with breathtaking mountain views.

Pros

  • Iconic and breathtaking views, especially from the terraces and Circuit 1A
  • Highly praised scenic train journey to the site
  • Lives up to the hype as a world-class historical landmark
  • Relatively accessible compared to other remote ruins

Cons

  • Significant logistical hassle involving multiple bookings (site, train, bus)
  • Risk of altitude sickness, requiring careful planning
  • Susceptibility to travel disruptions, such as rail closures due to local protests
  • Can feel rushed and 'awful' if attempted on too short a timeline

Caveats

  • Acclimatizing in the Sacred Valley or Ollantaytambo before visiting Cusco and Machu Picchu is strongly recommended
  • Tickets for the site, the train to Aguas Calientes, and the bus must be booked well in advance online
  • The specific circuit you book determines your viewpoint; not all circuits provide the 'classic' view

Best for

  • History and archaeology enthusiasts
  • Travelers who enjoy scenic mountain landscapes
  • Those able to dedicate at least a week to the region to avoid rushing

Avoid if

  • You have less than a week for the entire trip
  • You are unwilling to navigate complex multi-step travel logistics
  • You have severe concerns about altitude that cannot be managed with acclimation

Short answer, yes absolutely. It is a place everyone should see. Your strategy of going to the Sacred Valley before MP and Cusco is absolutely correct to get used to the altitude. I have similar altitude issues but was not bothered at all by the altitude in MP or Ollantaytambo.

Angkor Wat, Machu Picchu and Petra impressed me the most.

Machu Picchu — the sunbeams breaking through the early morning clouds, walking around and feeling like you’re on an island floating in the sky, looking across to other islands.

I still felt like nothing hit me harder than seeing the entirety of Machu Picchu from the terraces as you enter the site.

1A gets to go to another viewpoint so you'll get to enjoy more of that view.

Book your tickets in advance online for Machu Picchu, the train to Aguas Calientes, and a bus back to Cusco.

It is not worth it if you are going there and back in a week. That sounds rushed and awful. It is worth it if you have extra time to build in to your schedule. The whole Sacred Valley from Cusco to MP is special. Lots of ruins, unique culture, and delicious foods.
