Lombok
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Lombok is widely regarded by travelers as a quieter, less crowded, and more affordable alternative to Bali. It offers a similar landscape of stunning beaches, rice paddies, and surfing spots but at a slower pace. While it is often described as a 'hidden gem' or a 'Bali bis' (Bali second), it is particularly noted for its outdoor adventure opportunities, including hiking the Mt. Rinjani volcano and exploring waterfalls.
Pros
- Significantly fewer tourists and less traffic compared to Bali
- Excellent surfing conditions, particularly during the dry season (Sept/Oct)
- Breathtaking natural scenery including beaches, rice paddies, and waterfalls
- Access to world-class hiking at Mt. Rinjani
- Generally more affordable than neighboring Bali
- Welcoming locals and a more 'off the beaten track' feel
Cons
- Fewer activities and less infrastructure compared to the high-density tourist areas of Bali
- May not be worth the transit time for travelers on very short itineraries (e.g., 10 days or less)
- Less of a 'party' atmosphere than the nearby Gili Islands
Caveats
- Travelers report conflicting information regarding development; some find it very westernized while others still consider it a hidden gem.
- There is some uncertainty among users about how quickly the island is 'settling down' or developing.
Best for
- Surfers seeking consistent swells and fewer crowds
- Hikers and outdoor enthusiasts looking to trek Mt. Rinjani
- Budget-conscious travelers
- Honeymooners seeking quiet, scenic areas
Avoid if
- You have a very limited timeframe (under 10 days) and want to maximize your time in Bali
- You prefer high-energy nightlife and a wide variety of western-style amenities

More time in Lombok would help you get *a little* off the beaten track and find time for a place like Gili Asahan.
Isn't it better to do 2 weeks in Lombok? You'll have to go to Lombok anyway to reach Gili Trawangan, and it's a hidden gem with stunning beaches, mighty volcano, and also hidden temples.
i keep reading different things online about lombok and i actually read quiet a few things saying lombok is very western, other people saying its really nice and not to skip. so im just a bit lost at this point ahaha, i feel like i read one thing and the next thing i read is the complete opposite.
Philippines is super fun for a family trip and split your trip between Bali and Lombok too

For between Gili Air for between, Gili Meno for more low key Lombok for a cheaper Bali with less to do.
Go. Indonesia is actually dry season June through August so you'd be visiting at the perfect time. Bali, Lombok, Yogyakarta are all great then.
