I, too, found Ljubljana very underwhelming. I really like some of the smaller cities in Slovenia and Ljubljana castle is cool but overall I didn't love Ljubljana as a city. It's easily one of my least favorite European capitals.
Slovenia should be right up your alley. You can easily do both Ljubljana and some other city if you have just over a week. If we're talking 8-9 days I'd suggest 5 in Ljubljana as a base for day trips and then you could do 3 days by the coast in Piran or you could go east to Maribor, which is also really nice.
But from Ljubljana you can do Bled, you can do Bohinj, you can do Postojna + Predjama. All of it is amazing.

I think 2 days might be more reasonable for Ljubljana because it's a pretty small city.
