Light From Uncommon Stars - again this is set in more or less a single city and revolves around only a few interconnected characters. The stakes are not world ending. It is... One of the strangest pieces of fiction that I've read in a while... if you take it in stride and are just looking for a good time, with some decent stakes, then it certainly will deliver.

My book club liked the fantasy/sci-fi hybrid about a young trans girl violin prodigy, two unique lesbian characters, a deal with the devil and a donut shop. It could almost be described a cozy because of the donut shop backdrop but enough things happen with the teen and such that it stays interesting.
Light From Uncommon Stars is a fantastic book that blends genres. Trans marginalization and specialization is a major theme of the book. Amazing but dark read.
Light from uncommon stars by Ryka Aoki I love this book
My book club read Light from uncommon stars and we liked it - it certainly fulfills the requirement of being different. It is full of unusual and weird ideas and can't even be firmly placed in one genre. It is a fun and overall very wholesome book - except when it's not.
I definitely recommend Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki
