Leiden

Pros
- I'd recommend Leiden or Utrecht or Delft.
- Leiden is also a popular alternative. Its canals are a bit wider than Amsterdam's. Its museums are more science and history based. Katwijk beach is a half hour by bus.
- Hotel incl. parking in Leiden. Half price or less compared to Amsterdam city hotels incl. parking place. Direct speed trains to Amsterdam center and Den Haag (Mauritshuis and Escher museum is a must). And Leiden has a beautiful old city...
- You can see.most of the country in day trips from places like Leiden and Utrecht (Amsterdam too, but it's quite expensive).
- As a Dutch local, I have a slight preference for Haarlem, Utrecht, and Leiden over Alkmaar.

Try staying in Leiden. It's a more interesting area than Schipol, a there's fast, frequent train service to Amsterdam, The Hague and Utrecht.
Leiden is my favourite city in The Netherlands and I would move there in a heartbeat.
