Staying in Lecce is smart, unless you prefer to be on the beach in which case I’d recommend staying in Otranto
if you’ve never been to Lecce that’s a must. It’s a city of a couple of hundred thousand people but it’s quite a nice one and a Baroque one.
This winter I visited Lecce, the Venice area (Treviso, Padua ), Verona, Vicenza, Bassano del Grappa and Trieste and cannot tell you how wonderful it has been.
Explore the baroque churches, find some good restaurants and enjoy Lecce would be my approach.
