No need to stay in Lake Louise, but its a nice day trip from Banff.
Lake Louise is accessible as early as April. Moraine Lake road is closed until June. The Banff gondola is also open, but of course visibility at the top of the mountain is highly variable due to clouds and fog, and it will be cool, possibly chilly up there. Parking is also very limited at Lake Louise, taking your own vehicle is not recommended.
