There are lots of places to visit in Scotland, but if you really want to go somewhere else, why not parts of England (Lake District, Cornwall/Devon) or Wales?
I'd sooner recommend York, Bath, Liverpool, Manchester, the Peak District, Lake District, or Cornwall for places in England.
