Pros

  • This game is the #1 reason I still have my PS3 plugged in. I am beyond surprised that dragon-riding isn't a bigger thing in video games.
  • The concept of the player being a dragon rider and blowing shit up in the wide battlefield is still unique enough that I have to recommend trying it out. I still haven’t played a game quite like this one… which is insane to me because th...
  • The best thing about Lair is that it removes that division between air and land segments. It makes the ground combat something you can do naturally as part of your moveset. The seamless ground and air combat is only possible with dragons...

  • Parent context: Have you ever had your mind blown by what you expected to be a mediocre game? I was well aware of Lair’s infamy. Reply: This sounds like it should be the Alone in the Dark of a new genre. Then when the Resident Evil of it...
  • I think about Lair probably once a week. It's the reason I still own a PS3, even though I haven't actually played it in years. Rogue Squadron with dragons. Should have been the best game ever. It keeps me up at night sometimes, the waste...

Parent context: Have you ever had your mind blown by what you expected to be a mediocre game? I was well aware of Lair’s infamy. Reply: This sounds like it should be the Alone in the Dark of a new genre. Then when the Resident Evil of it comes along, we can point to Lair and be like, hey, remember this game?! Yeah it kinda sucks, but it was super important in gaming history!

Lair, however, even with the analog controls, feels so loose and clunky. Obviously, the dragons should be weighty, but this one just feels more janky rather than intentionally awkward. The moment I moved the dragon, it felt slow and annoying. It never feels satisfying.

I was well aware of Lair’s infamy. How it became a punching bag in the early PS3 days... However, all I heard was that it had the worst control scheme ever with forced Six-Axis controls. This was later patched to add the traditional analog control, so I was curious if the game is any way playable. So the first thing I did was going into the options and turning on the analog controls, and I didn’t have much problem with the controls.

Well, only because the game runs at 5-10 fps. Lair looks good, with the visual design that hides the N64 level texture quality as best as possible, but the game runs like a slideshow. ... Lair, however, even with the analog controls, feels so loose and clunky.

The concept of the player being a dragon rider and blowing shit up in the wide battlefield is still unique enough that I have to recommend trying it out. I still haven’t played a game quite like this one… which is insane to me because this is the concept that should be a genre at this point.

The best thing about Lair is that it removes that division between air and land segments. It makes the ground combat something you can do naturally as part of your moveset. The seamless ground and air combat is only possible with dragons, not vehicles. That was the first thing that blew my mind.

Lair, however, even with the analog controls, feels so loose and clunky. Obviously, the dragons should be weighty, but this one just feels more janky rather than intentionally awkward. The moment I moved the dragon, it felt slow and annoying. It never feels satisfying. There are too many animation interruptions and automations that it’s not clear what you are even doing.
