There has been some major flooding in and around Kruger so double check for any roads that are still closed or have become 4x4 only in roads.
We have been to Kruger, Serengeti, Maasai Mara and Tarangire. Kruger is the best with kids(my daughter was 7 at the time too) and you will see LOTS of animals!

Kruger is fantastic for self-driving, and there's a wide range of accommodation options -- many of them in the park, with great views out over watering holes at night where you can just watch the animals come up. I have 0 recollection of encountering "loud tourist groups" or even "traffic" there.
However, you can see most everything else in Kruger, even just by driving around yourself and staying in the SANParks cottages. You can also combine some days at a game lodge in one of the private reserves connected to the Kruger and then some self-drive time in the Kruger, if you want.
