Pros

• One option could be a refurbished Kobo Sage or Elipsa.
• I use a Kobo Elipsa with a Surface stylus. It’s big enough to read PDFs without zooming in and that stylus feels nice to write with
• I think the Elipsa would be the best choice for reading papers, textbooks etc., but maybe a bit too big as a general reading device.
• Your best bet will likely be boox note air 4c or 3/3c or Kobo Elipsa.
• With 10", Google Drive and Overdrive and compatibility for taking notes with a stylus, you have the Kobo Elipsa.

Cons

• If you plan to read Manga, go big. Scribe, Kobo Elipsa, Android-based e-readers with big screen.
• There’s an Elipsa but that’s more comparable to the Kindle Scribe which is also rarely talked about as ereaders go - more like an “e-note” device
• I bought the Kobo Elipsa for reading and marking up PDFs and it’s…fine. I mean it works but it’s pretty underpowered, although the newer Elipsa 2E is faster. It has notebook functionality but the palm rejection is poor.
• looking at the price (minimum $400 for Boox Note 4C, Kobo Elipsa), it makes me wonder is it even worth buying an ereader if it doesn't allow replacing the battery
