KitchenAid

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
KitchenAid is widely regarded as a premier "Buy It For Life" brand, particularly for its stand mixers which are frequently cited for their extreme longevity, often lasting 20 to 40 years. While the brand is praised for its "workhorse" performance and superior build compared to budget competitors, there is a recurring community debate regarding the build quality of newer models versus vintage units. Despite some concerns over plastic components in modern iterations, it remains a top recommendation for home cooks who value durability and aesthetic consistency.
Pros
- Exceptional durability with many units lasting several decades
- Solid, heavy-duty performance described as a 'workhorse'
- High value in refurbished or used models, which often feature higher wattage
- Excellent for whipping and general baking tasks
- Strong inheritance value and long-term parts availability
Cons
- Significant weight makes it difficult to move or store in deep cabinets
- Reports of plastic gears in newer models potentially reducing lifespan compared to vintage versions
- Direct shipping from the manufacturer may lack discrete packaging, potentially ruining gifts
- High retail price for new, entry-level models
Caveats
- Some power-users prefer specialized mixers like the Ankarsrum for heavy dough, using KitchenAid primarily for whipping
- Entry-level models (325W) are notably weaker than Pro or refurbished models (600W+)
- Parts and assemblies for secondary products like coffee makers may not be cross-compatible between models
Best for
- Home bakers seeking a long-term kitchen investment
- Users who have permanent counter space for heavy appliances
- Cooks who prefer buying refurbished or vintage high-quality gear
Avoid if
- You have limited physical strength or need to frequently move the mixer
- You primarily make heavy artisan bread doughs and require a dedicated spiral mixer
- You are strictly looking for the cheapest entry point into stand mixers

When I got my kids their Kitchen Aids, I found refurbished ones with over 600 Watts (much stronger than the 325 watt starter models) that were cheaper than the starter models. 20 years later and they’re all still going strong.
Kitchen aid has something, we found one on goodwill . Com and had to buy the glass from one place and the assembly from another. They are over $120 new. I got both pieces, with shipping for under $20. Just be patient and know your sizes, parts dont mix if i recall.
It arrived today in a normal box, completely ruining the surprise since my wife was the one who saw it on the porch. ... I bought direct from KitchenAid website.
Im not big on single function items or electronics (besides my vitamix and kitchenaid) but interested to hear about those as well if you believe they fit the bill.
even Kitchenaid has one that I’ve read is really nice.
Parent context: This is true and I absolutely adore my Ank (I have both an Ank and a KA). It is my go to for any dough. The KA only comes out for whipping. Reply: The KA only comes out for whipping.
I've read that newer KitchenAids aren't built as well as old ones and have plastic gears that break
My mom has had the same KitchenAid for like 30 years and insists I need to buy one too because they last forever.
The Kitchen Aid is just plain superior to the cheaper brands. The higher price is not just the brand name. These things are solid workhorses. They just work better, and they last forever.
The only negative (which is also a positive), is that they are heavy. If you are storing your mixer deep in the back of a cabinet, it is a pain to drag it out.
