Kinosaki Onsen

Pros

• Kiso Valley doesn't give you much if the trails are closed, but Kinosaki still works as an onsen night either way. I'd take Kinosaki for that one-night stop.
• The town itself in yukata is wonderful regardless.
• We also did Kinosaki Onsen and absolutely loved it!! Get a vending machine milk after one of the baths
• Kinosaki Onsen is one of the best choices in Japan for this — all 7 public bathhouses (sotoyu) have a unified tattoo-friendly policy, which is explicitly stated town-wide.
• Take one day off Kyoto and travel to Kinosaki onsen. It's hard to find a more traditional onsen than that. Plus, you could hike Mount Daishi and eat Tajima beef.

Cons

• I wouldn't go to Kinosaki for just one night. Two nights is perfect, you really need one full day to make it worth it for the travel time to/from.
• Unless there is something you particularly want in Kinosaki Onsen, I find it a bit out of the way for a single night stay.
• I only spent one night in Kinosaki Onsen and thought that was enough. If you like more fast-paced travel, you might get bored with 3 nights there.
