Pros

  • If you have access to Kanopy there are a bunch of good movies on there, including Jia Zhangke and Taiwanese New Wave.
  • Libby and Kanopy both have remote media if your library partners with them.
  • See if your library gives you access to Kanopy. I've watched *Tokyo Story* (which has quite a bit of sparse, slow-spoken basic dialogue, which helped me) on it so far.
  • Love that this is on Kanopy! I'd been thinking of renting it.
  • I got back into going to the library and have Kanopy streaming and Cloud Library for audiobooks

Cons

  • Does your current library have another video service like Kanopy? That's another streaming service that a lot of libraries have.
  • If I plug my local city card in(suburbs to a biggish city, it won't work for some services, like Kanopy.
  • Looks like it’s just Libby and Kanopy.
  • Kanopy seems to have some great movies, but their interface isn’t great for browsing.

Also because of them you can almost always (in the U.S.) get free subscriptions to Kanopy and Hoopla which let you stream even more movies for free.

I’ve replaced my viewing with out-of-state patron cards to a couple of libraries which provide access to all electronic materials, including audiobooks and streaming video content through Kanopy.

iirc, each library has a different libby catalog, just like kanopy or hoopla.

Depending on where you live your library likely has digital services like Kanopy or Hoopla that let you stream movies and shows.

Kanopy has a great “classic film” library which should be what OP is looking for
