As for day trip, I absolutely suggest picking one of the following three: ...2. Kamakura (many older temples and a nice town to walk around/explore)
Note that Kamakura is only crowded around the daibutsu/Hasedera area and the shopping street with Tsurugaoka hachimangu shrine. Pretty much anyone else in the city is not crowded!

Japan was absolutely one of my favorite destinations. When I went, I made stops in Tokyo, Kyoto with day trips to Kamakura, Nara and Hiroshima. I will definitely go back again one day. Its a special place.
