Pros

  • You can mix easy city spots like Taipei Zoo, Maokong Gondola, and Children’s Amusement Park with chill days at parks, night markets, and maybe a short day trip to Jiufen or Tamsui.
  • 18. Jiufen at 6AM
  • 16. A misty residential street in Jiufen
  • I’ve heard amazing things about Jiufen, which looks exactly like something out of a Studio Ghibli movie, and the night markets for having incredible but cheap food.
  • Despite seeing many posts calling Jiufen overrated (A-Mei Tea House itself definitely is), we really enjoyed the town. It’s a beautiful hilly area with the sea alongside, narrow lanes, cafés, and great views.

Cons

  • We did Jiufen back when COVID hit. Those trains are sketchier and more outdated towards the Eastern side so we booked a private car.

We actually really liked Jiufen, despite seeing many posts online calling it overrated (I do agree that A-Mei Tea House itself is quite hyped). But the town overall has so much character. It’s a beautiful hilly area with the sea alongside, narrow lanes, old houses, cafés, and viewpoints that feel straight out of a postcard.
