• I read Huck Finn immediately before reading James and I agree totally with OP and thought James was pretty mid. ... I felt like Huck is already a great story with a great message and James is just that same message less well told.
• There are parts of the book that I find interesting; others, not so much. I especially found the AAVE vs. white English thing to be a bit strange because it feels like it's subtly saying that you HAVE to talk like that to be educated.
