Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The iPhone 8 is frequently cited as one of Apple's most reliable legacy devices, with many users reporting over six years of consistent use. While it is praised for its compact form factor and historical durability, current sentiment is divided; some users still find it functional for basic tasks, while others consider it 'prehistoric' and long overdue for an upgrade due to performance lag and thermal issues.

Pros

  • Exceptional longevity, with multiple reports of 6+ years of ownership without major faults
  • Compact size that fits well in hands and pockets
  • Supports 4K video at 60fps
  • Seamless integration with the Apple ecosystem (Watch, AirPods, and Wallet)

Cons

  • Performance is slow by modern standards
  • Device tends to heat up easily during use
  • Outdated hardware compared to contemporary smartphones
  • Limited camera zoom capabilities compared to newer competitors

Caveats

  • Opinions on current usability are mixed, ranging from 'works great' to 'atrocious'
  • The hardware is increasingly viewed as obsolete for modern app demands

Best for

  • Users who prioritize a small, pocketable phone
  • Those seeking a very low-cost entry point into iOS for basic communication

Avoid if

  • You require snappy performance for modern apps or gaming
  • You need a high-quality camera with significant zoom

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median source age of 425 days, which is significant for a fast-changing product like hardware.

Older iphones have ability for 4k60, oldest one is iphone 8(plus model since it has 2x zoom camera) and X, tho they don’t have crazy zoom like Samsung.

I’ve always used android up until year ago when someone gave me a IPhone 8 when my new Samsung phone broke. For it being a iPhone 8 still works great. Android phones this old would be slow.

Parent context: Definitely not true I use to be a heavy android user on Samsung g7 and LG G3 and G4 but went to iPhone 8 11 and 14 and just recently went to one plus 13. iPhones just work flawlessly especially if you use an apple watch and air pods and the apple wallet is usually first to be adopted; being fair android is stable too and Google wallet seems to be getting better. That being said if you want a … Reply: I suppose it's not a surprise that if you use hardware from the same manufacturer it works well together, but all of those things individually are poor value.

I have been using my Iphone 8 for 9 years and think it should be time to let the poor phone retire (it still works well, just a bit slow and heats up easily). ... I love how Iphone 8 fits perfectly in my hands and pockets.

First iPhone 8+ then 11 pro. One thing you will always appreciate is the attention to detail Apple provides in everything.
