Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Hoka is highly regarded for its maximalist cushioning, with many users describing the experience as "walking on clouds." It is a top recommendation for long-distance running and professions requiring long hours of standing, such as healthcare. However, the brand is deeply polarizing due to its "chunky" and "dad-core" aesthetic, and some users report that the soft outsoles sacrifice long-term durability for immediate comfort.

Pros

  • Exceptional cushioning and shock absorption for long-distance running and walking.
  • Highly effective for individuals with foot pain or plantar fasciitis.
  • Generous wide fit and roomy toe boxes available in many models.
  • Excellent for long shifts on hard surfaces like hospital concrete.

Cons

  • Polarizing, bulky aesthetics often described as "ugly" or "garish."
  • Soft outsoles tend to wear out faster than other major running brands.
  • Premium price point compared to some traditional athletic shoes.
  • Aggressive rocker soles can cause stability or calf issues for some runners.

Caveats

  • While often discussed in 'Buy It For Life' contexts, users note the foam outsoles are a consumable part that wears relatively quickly.
  • The transition from traditional shoes to Hoka's low-drop or rocker geometry may require an adjustment period to avoid calf strain.

Best for

  • Long-distance runners and marathon trainers.
  • Healthcare workers and others standing for 12+ hour shifts.
  • Travelers who prioritize walking comfort over fashion.

Avoid if

  • You prefer a sleek, low-profile streetwear aesthetic.
  • You require a high-durability outsole for rugged terrain that lasts multiple years.
  • You have had negative experiences with maximalist or rocker-style midsoles.

I do want either asics gel nimbus or hokas as they’re more like the oofos then my running shoes (softer cushioning)

As a bigger guy, I'd stay away from shoes that have very squishy soles such as Hoka. I've watched people walk in those and see the sole collapse into a pancake due to weight. They also don't offer much stable support.

I’ve had both Hoka and Topo trail runners (Altra is also highly regarded) with Vibram megagrip soles. The traction of the soft rubber is outstanding, but they wear out quickly.

I was strictly Hoka until about 10 years ago and made the switch to Altras and have been exclusively in them since.

I swore I'd never go Hoka. Too expensive, ugly, etc. Then I broke my heel. I'm nominating the Hokas engineering team for sainthood.

HOKA makes one of the most comfy and supportive shoes and boots.

This is exactly why I've committed to one brand/style for work boots and running shoes. If Hoka and Thorogood ever go under, I'm barefoot.
